Difference between Door Slab and Pre-hung Door
Door Slab Only
Door Slab Only - No hardware preparation - No frame and casings included. See pic above
Basically the door slab is just the door itself, which doesn’t have any bores (any holes) for any of the hardware. Door slab only – doesn’t include any of the preparation and is just a well packed single door. It doesn’t come with any frames (jambs) or casings (moldings, trim) or hinges.
Pre-hung door
A pre-hung door - a door unit which is assembled and prepared for easy installation. Typically, pre-hung doors are mortised for hinges and locks. They include matching door Jambs and Casings, Hinges, Lock, Handles and Jamb width extension (if necessary). The common understanding of a pre-hung door in the US is the assembled unit like in any door store or factory. But in real there are two types of pre-hung doors - they could be Assembled Pre-hung or Knocked Down Pre-hung. IndigoDoors.com offers pre-hung doors in Knocked Down option for easy and safe shipping.
Knocked Down Pre-Hung Doors
Indigo Doors is offering Knocked Down Pre-hung Interior Doors which are easy to assemble and to install. Knocked Down Units we usually call “Full Set” or “Full Unit”, which means the set will include the Door Slab, the Matching Jambs and Casings, the Concealed or Plain Bearing Hinges, Magnetic Lock and a set of Handles.
Door slabs and Matching Jambs are precisely pre-machined to exact match each other at the assemblage points. We are using European hardware only, that is why every door, ordered as a Full Set, is mortised with the European machines in mm. Jambs and casings are carefully packed and delivered together with Door Slabs. Every parts balk are labeled to make assembly and installation quick and easy at the job site.
Rough opening measurement
See picture below in order to know how to accurately measure Rough Opening. Firstly, three times measure the widths between the Studs of the entryway. At picture 1 they are highlighted with arrowed lines and A, B, C. Be sure to record the smallest width of the 3 measurements.
Secondly, measure the height on both sides from the Top Stud to the Floor (see picture 2 - A, B lines) and also record the smallest measurement.
Note: for determining a correct door height, while doing the measurements, the floor MUST be installed already and measurements must be taken with the floor on.
Determining your Door Size
(for the single and double swing door configurations)
From your Rough Opening width subtract not less than 2" and not less than 1 ½" from the height. This will determine your door slab size.
As an example: if your door slab size is 30” x 80” – your rough opening should be not less than 32” x 81 ½”. And if your rough opening is 38” x 98” – you can fit in the door slab 36” x 96”.
Door Construction Overview
A Swinging Door itself can't be used in a proper way without its Frame. Our door frames consist of the following components: Single Rabbeted Jambs and L-shaped Casings. A Door Slab gets attached to one of the Jambs with the needed type of Hinges and is being hold by the Lock.
The Casings (Moldings, Trim) are applied around the door into the jambs for decorating purposes and are able to cover the gap between the Frame (Jambs) and the Drywall. All frames parts are finished with the same exact type and color of the top coating as the door slab itself.
Single Rabbeted Jambs
Single Rabbeted Jambs is a Jamb with only one rabbet (thinner side of the jamb) and a stopper (thicker part of the Jamb). Indigo Doors Jambs are made of Solid Wood or Marine Plywood base. The door stop (stopper) inlays a Rubber Seal for better sound insulation and door protection.
Indigo Doors offers Telescopic Adjustable frames, which can cover the wall from 4” to 5 3/8” without using extensions. The width of the door jamb is 4 1/8”, which is adjustable wit the help of the L shaped Casings.
L-shaped casings
The L-Casings are made of high-pressed water resistant MDF. They adjust the thickness of the frame up to 5 3/8” due to L-shaped construction. Casings can be simply pushed in into the grooves on the frame and no nails are needed.
Indigo Doors casings width is 2 3/4”
Frame Overview
Single rabbeted Jambs made of marine plywood base with a rubber sealed high-pressed MDF door stop. The jamb has two 3/4” deep grooves from both sides. The thickness of the door jamb is 4 1/8”, which is adjustable to 5 3/8” using the L-Casing molding. Casings are applied around the door jamb, and have the exactly same finish as the door and no matching paint would be needed.
Rubber Seal
Rubber seal is used for noise insulation and shock absorption when closing the door, as well as is also used to reduce dust entering into the room. It is important that the rubber seal in the door frame is bland.
Jambs Width Extension
Jamb Extensions are additional parts for extending the door frame. If the wall thickness is greater than standard jamb width, extensions must be used. Jamb width extensions come in identical Veneer finishes as the Door Slab and the Frames. Standard frame covers 4 1/8” to 5 3/8”. Jamb extensions give you the ability to cover additional 2” widths.
Wall Thickness Measurement
Take your wall thickness measurements from edge to edge (as illustrated above). Please note that sheetrock thickness is also considered in a total measurement number as well as any tile that may be on the wall.
Available Hinges option.
Otlav 3D Italian Concealed Hinges
Adjustable concealed hinge is used to create modern and designed flush doors, as well as is creating a totally new sophisticated look of any other door, where the concealed hinges are installed. Thanks to the symmetric milling, the hinge is reversible and allowing to choose the door verse directly on site (only with double rabbeted jambs). The sash movement is fluid and precise until 180 degrees. 2 to 4 hinges are needed per door slab (depending on door size). Zinc Bodies and Steel Links is what making our concealed hinges work for decades. Finish: Satin Nickel (other finishes are available upon request). Made in Italy.
Plain-Bearing Hinges
For customers, who got used to more traditional look of the door or has a limited budget, Indigo Doors offers Plain Bearing Hinges. All steel base material is used for manufacturing this type of hinges. Although the hinge is visible, it still requires full mortise (same as for concealed ones), as the hinge goes flush with the jambs. The plain Bearing Hinges have only one finish – Shiny Satin Nickel. 2 to 4 hinges are needed per door (depending on door size).

Door Swing Direction
Swing direction refers to the hinged side of the door and the way the door swings: inside or outside of the room or home. It is important to choose correct swing direction. In some case pre-hung door with wrong chosen swing direction could not be reversed.
Please review the illustrations below in order to have clear understanding of door swing directions.
Left or Right Hand means that hinged side of the door is located from your left or right hand side accordingly. Location where you are standing when determining swing direction is considered as outside.
As an example: If you need the door for a bedroom, you need to be standing outside the bedroom looking at your door. You see the hinges are on your left (an obviously you will be opening the door with your left hand as well) and the door goes Inside of your bedroom. Therefore, you have a Left Hand Inswing.
Double Doors Are Available for Most Door Models
Flush Bolt
Left or Right Hand means that hinged side of the door is located from your left or right hand side accordingly. Location where you are standing when determining swing direction is considered as outside.
As an example: If you need the door for a bedroom, you need to be standing outside the bedroom looking at your door. You see the hinges are on your left (an obviously you will be opening the door with your left hand as well) and the door goes Inside of your bedroom. Therefore, you have a Left Hand Inswing.
Double Doors Swing Directions
Swing Direction for double door configuration depends on Closure Option. Double doors with flush bolt closures have one door slab as active and the other as passive. Depending on which slab will be active or passive, swing direction should be chosen.
When the closure option is Magnetic Catches then both door slabs will be active and you can choose the way the doors swing; In-swing / Out-swing. Please refer to the following illustration in order to determine your double door swing direction.
Pocket Doors Information
A pocket door is a sliding door that slides back into a compartment (pocket) in the wall. These types of doors slide right into the wall and don't have any hinges like standard swing doors. Also these doors don't have any swing direction. Please review the illustrations below in order to have clear idea of pocket doors in single and double configurations.
Pocket doors are usually used when there is no room for the swinging door or for achieving an architectural effect.
The Door Slab slides on rollers that are placed in an overhead track. In most cases bottom door guides are needed for a stable slide.
Please note: for the Pocket doors installation, you must have enough space in the wall. The actual rough opening for the pocket door must be the door slab width times two plus 2”.
Pocket Door Hardware
Our door slabs are 1 5/8” or 41 mm thick. If ordering standard pocked door system – be sure it can be adjusted to fit the panel. You can add pocket door flush pulls and locks when configuring your door. Choice of passage or privacy hardware options available.
